こんにちは、創域会事務局です。4月に入り対面での新入生ガイダンスが開催された日、久しぶりに、本当に久しぶりに食堂に人があふれているのを見ました。
ようやくこんな日が来た。感無量です。

ひとつ、ふたつと毎日小さな白い花が増え、日に日に甘い芳香が周囲に広がる様子を観察しながら、いつもの春を感じている今日この頃。満開になるとそのフワフワと白く伸びた枝が、春風に一斉にたなびく・・・雪柳（ユキヤナギ）である。このいつもの春の中で、今年は新しい感覚の発見があった。「甘い芳香」である。
ちょうど2年ほど前、2021年の春にこちらのコラムでマスクについて触れた。あの頃は、2020年という1年を慣れないマスク生活と先行きの見えない不安感の中で過ごし、世の中全体が動揺していたように思う。その中にあって、私自身も春の花の香りを感じることができないことを憂いていた。でも、今年は何か違う。先の雪柳も、生垣の沈丁花も、公園の梅の花も、それぞれの香りで春の訪れを歓迎しているように思う。
2023年3月13日以降、政府がマスクの着用を個人の判断に委ねるとした。集団生活を送る学校、企業、団体によっては年度末までマスク着用を継続することを示しているが、これまでの3年間とは心持ちが変わる。個人の希望に応じて選択できる自由は、これまでの抑圧感を多少なりとも軽減することに繋がるのではないか。一方で、ルールがなくなることに対する不安の声も聞こえる。他人にどう思われるかが心配という本音が見え隠れする。そこで、小学生と園児の子供に聞いてみた、「マスクどうする？」と。すると、「暑くなったら外すけど、着けていく」と返って来た。純真なる「個人の判断」を見た。
そのような訳で、今現在はマスクを着用した生活を継続しているのだが、冒頭に述べたように春の花の香りを感じることができている。マスクは2年前と変わっていない。すると、変わったのは私の嗅覚機能か、心理状態か。マスク越しにも花のかすかな香りを嗅ぎ分ける精細さを身に着けたのか、これから飛躍に向かっていくであろう世の中への期待感が嗅覚を鋭敏にさせたのか、理由は良くわからないが、人の持つ柔軟性の効果かもしれないと思う。
もう一つ、雪柳にマスク越しの鼻をくっつけてクンクンと香りを嗅いでいる子供達を見て気が付いた。「こっちもいい匂いだよ。匂い、わかる？」と確認し合っている。この3年間を経て、私たち大人も思い出したように思う。自分ではない他人は、自分とは異なる感覚、思想を持っているだろうという当たり前のことを。この「思いやり」に慣れることなく、忘れることなく、マスクを外した後にあっても雪柳の甘い芳香のような優しさが残る世の中になることを願って・・・。
雪柳、こんな花です。なんてすてきなネーミングでしょう。

Spring times, the start of a new Spring
I feel the arrival of Spring as I observe the increasing number of small white flowers and their fragrance. When they are in full bloom, their fluffy white branches flutter in the spring breeze…, the spiraea, in Japanese we call it 雪柳 yuki-yanagi (snow willow).
In this usual spring season, I discovered a new sweet fragrance this year.
Two years ago, in the spring of 2021, I wrote about masks through this column. Back then, everyone lived under unfamiliar mask lifestyle. We all felt a sense of uncertainty about the future, and the world as a whole seemed to be in turmoil. In the midst of all this, I also felt depressed not being able to smell the fragrance of spring flowers. But this year it is different. The spiraea, the daphne in the hedgerows and the plum blossoms in the park all seem to be welcoming the arrival of spring with their own fragrances.
After 13 March 2023, the government has loosened the masks restrictions. Individuals could choose to wear or not wear masks. Some schools, companies and organizations indicated that they will continue to wear masks until the end of the academic year, but there is a change mentality-wise. Having the freedom to choose to wear a mask or not somehow reduces the feeling of oppression. On the other hand, there are also voices of feeling anxious. It’s hard to know what a person is truly thinking, so I asked my primary school and kindergarten children, ‘Would you wear a mask?’. They replied, ‘I will take it off when it gets hot, but I will wear it.’ From their responses I saw a genuine sense of ‘personal choice’.
So, at the moment, I am continuing to wear the mask, but as I mentioned at the beginning of this article, I can smell the fragrance of spring flowers. I am still wearing the same type of mask I wore two years ago. So perhaps it is my olfactory function or my psychological state that has changed. I am not sure whether I have acquired the finesse to smell the faint fragrance of flowers through my mask, or whether my sense of smell has been sharpened by the anticipation of a world that is finally changing. But think, it maybe the effect of people’s flexibility to adapt.
I noticed another thing when I saw children sticking their noses through their masks to the spiraea trees and sniffing them. ‘It smells good over here too. Can you smell it?’, as they check with each other to see whether they could all smell it.
Over the past three years, we adults, have naturally assumed that other people will have different senses and feelings from us. I hope we will never get used to or forget this ‘compassion’, and that the world will remain as gentle as the sweet aroma of spiraea, even after no one wears masks anymore…
