卒業から10年、母校へ戻って ― 新たな一歩
私は2015年に東京大学大学院新領域創成科学研究科のサステイナビリティ学教育プログラム（GPSS）を修了しました。それからこれまで、研究や教育、さまざまな新しい挑戦を重ねてきました。そして昨年、母校である新領域に特任准教授（サステイナブル社会デザインセンター）として戻ってくる機会をいただきました。
しかし、この新しいスタートは決して順調なものではありませんでした。着任を目前にして病に倒れ、半年以上の入院生活を送ることになったのです。復職が叶ったのは、新領域創とバリアフリー推進オフィスをはじめ、多くの方々の支えがあったからこそです。再び全力で研究や業務に取り組めることは、何よりもありがたく、嬉しいことです。
現在取り組んでいる主な研究のひとつが、クボタ東大ラボ のサステイナブルビオループ寄付講座です。食・水・環境の複雑なつながりを探るもので、異なるセクターが交わるところにこそ、新しい発見があると日々感じています。
また、2011年に来日し新領域に入学した当初から関わってきた里山団体との研究交流も再開しました。当時は主研究テーマではなかったものの、卒業まで活動を共にし、その後も連絡を取り続けてきました。そして今、再び一緒に活動できるようになり、高齢社会における自然との関わりに関する活動の未来について考えています。長い間会えず、また入院を経て久しぶりに現地を訪ねた際には、温かく迎えてくださり、お茶菓子までご用意いただきました。その優しさに胸を打たれると同時に、こうした地域社会の謙虚さや思いやりを改めて感じ、そして私たちのキャンパスがある柏市、そして人と環境との関わり方についても思いを巡らせました。
中でも、私が最も光栄に感じているのは、GPSSで再び働けることです。しかも今度は教員として、かつて自分を育ててくれたプログラムに貢献できる立場になったことは、身の引き締まる思いです。これから新たな道を歩み始める学生の成長を支えることができることに、心から感謝しています。
卒業から10年、今度は学生としてではなく教員として母校に戻ってきました。この場所にいられることを誇りに思い、これからも学び続け、同僚や学生の皆さんとともに成長していきたいと思います。
Returning to My Alma Mater After Ten Years – A New Chapter
I graduated from the Graduate Program in Sustainability Science (GPSS) at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Frontier Sciences in 2015. Since then, I have been on quite an academic journey, pursuing research, teaching, and new challenges along the way. Last year, I had the opportunity to return to my alma mater, this time as a Project Associate Professor at the Sustainable Society Design Center.
However, my new beginning did not go as smoothly as I had hoped. Before starting my position, I fell seriously ill and was hospitalized for more than half a year. My eventual return to work was made possible thanks to the tremendous support of many people, including GSFS and the Barrier Free Promotion Office. Being able to once again work and conduct research at full capacity is something I deeply appreciate.
One of the main projects I am currently involved in is the Kubota-UTokyo Lab – Sustainable BioLoop, where we explore the complex interconnections between food, water, and the environment. I find that the most interesting insights often emerge where different sectors intersect, and this project has been an excellent platform for such cross-sectoral thinking.
I have also resumed research interactions with the Satoyama group, which I initially joined when I arrived in Japan and began my studies at the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences in 2011. At that time, I worked with the group until my graduation, even though it was not my main research topic. After graduating, I stayed in touch with the group, and now, once again, I am collaborating with them—this time to think about the future of such activities related to interactions with nature in the aging society. When I visited them again after a long time away — and after my hospitalization — I was deeply touched by their kindness. They welcomed me warmly and even offered welcome sweets. Being with them reminded me of the humility and care that define such communities, and it also inspired me to reflect on Kashiwa City, where our campus is located, and on how we interact with people and environments around us.
What I feel most honored about, however, is being able to work with GPSS once again—now from the faculty side. It is humbling to be able to contribute to the same program that shaped my own career, and to support the growth of students who are beginning their own journeys. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity and look forward to giving back to the community that gave me so much.
Now, ten years after graduation, I have returned to my alma mater not as a student, but as a faculty member. It is a privilege to be here, and I will do my best to serve this institution while continuing to learn and grow alongside my colleagues and students
