常夏の地のレンタカーにご用心
20年前の話ですが、学会参加のためハワイを訪れました。現地でレンタカーを借りたのですが、最初の夜のこと、中華レストランでテイクアウトした夕食を車の中に置いたまま、スーパーマーケットで買い物をして、20分後に車に戻りました。すると、夕食の入った袋からガサゴソ音がします。袋の中を覗いてみると、ゴキがうじゃうじゃ。あわてて、袋を駐車場にあったゴミ箱に投げ捨てました。再度、中華レストランに戻るも、丁度閉店したところ。中華のつもりがマクドナルドになってしまいました。車を交換してもらおうとレンタカーの営業所に行きましたが、こちらも営業終了。ゴキブリが足を這い上ってくるのではないかとヒヤヒヤしながら、ホテルに戻りました。もちろん、レンタカーは、翌日、営業所に連絡して、交換してもらいました。関東地方ではゴキブリは車の中で冬を越せないと思いますが、ハワイだと年中繁殖できますよね。webを検索してみると、最近でもある話のようです。皆さんも、常夏の地のレンタカーにはご用心を！

Beware of Rental Cars in Tropical Regions
This happened about 20 years ago, when I visited Hawaii to attend a conference. I
rented a car there, and on the first evening, I picked up some Chinese food for dinner. I
left it in the car while I went grocery shopping at a supermarket.
When I returned to the car about 20 minutes later, I heard rustling noises coming from
the bag containing my dinner. I looked inside and found it crawling with cockroaches. I
panicked and threw the entire bag into a trash bin in the parking lot.
I went back to the Chinese restaurant to get another meal, but it had just closed. So,
instead of Chinese food, I ended up having McDonald’s for dinner.
I then went to the rental car office to ask for a replacement car, only to find that it had
already closed as well. I drove back to the hotel nervously, worried that cockroaches
might start crawling up my legs at any moment.
Of course, I contacted the rental car company the next day and had the car replaced.
In the Kanto region of Japan, I doubt cockroaches can survive the winter inside a car,
but in Hawaii, they can probably breed all year round. A quick search online suggests
that this sort of thing still happens even today.
So, if you ever rent a car in a tropical destination, beware!
