新年度がはじまりました。空気に充満する誰かの武者震い、新生活へ期待と不安、そして先が見えないことへの焦り。こちらにも伝染してそわそわしてきます。

春の匂いとチョコレート
春がやってきた。ここ数日の陽気だと、もう初夏だと言っても良いかもしれない。日当たりのいい場所では、2月末から咲き始めたオオイヌノフグリやホトケノザといった花たちに混じって、にょきにょきとカラスノエンドウが伸びている。青い葉や草の匂いも風に混じり始めた。
不思議なもので、春に新しい別れや出会いを経験するとき、ふと過去の別れや出会いが記憶の中から顔を出す。この時期、草花の匂いに思い出すのは、ある生化学の先生だ。「生物が活発に動き始めると、その二次代謝産物としての匂いの元がいろいろ風に乗ってね、春の匂いになるんだよ。かぐわしいね。」そんな、まるで色気のない春の匂いの説明を授業中にしてくださった先生である。二次代謝産物を説明するなら、花の匂いだけで十分事足りるのに、懇切丁寧に、その時期に活発に動き出す多足類やら甲虫類やらの匂いも説明してくださったものだから、いささか微妙な空気が講義室に漂ったものだ。もちろん、ご本人にとっては何よりも色っぽいお話だったに違いない。話すときの先生は大変幸せそうだった。
その後、10年ほど経って再会した折、私はフィールドワーク先のカリフォルニアのお土産に、バナナナメクジのチョコレートを持っていった。私は自信満々、きっと先生は面白がって喜んでくださると思いきや、「ナメクジだけはダメなんだ、匂いも美しくないし…」と、こちらに申し訳なさそうに、しかし断固として、先生らしい言葉で受け取りを拒否なさったのだった。バナナの匂いが付けられていますから、大丈夫ですよ。そんなフォローをしてみたが、「お土産とはいえ、小さな子が誤解することをしてはいけないと思います。バナナナメクジという名前は形からきているのであって、匂いではないのですから」と、しごくキリリとしたお顔でおっしゃったのであった。もう数年前に鬼籍に入られてしまったが、なんだかあの世でも楽しそうに、この世にはいない生き物を嬉々として追いかけて匂いを嗅ぎ、分析していそうで、春になると先生のことを思い出す。
春の匂いとチョコレートの思い出である（タイトル詐欺だとは言わせない）。

The new semester has started. The air is filled with someone’s excitement, upset for the new life and anxiety for the future. Such feelings are also contagious, making us fidgety.

The scent of spring and chocolate
Spring has arrived, but it may be said that it has been early summer from the weather of the past few days. At the places with sufficient sunshine, Vetch is growing, while mixing with flowers such as Persian speedwell and Henbit deadnettle, which began to bloom at the end of February. The scent of the green leaves and grass also began to mix with the wind.
It’s strange that when experiencing new farewell or encounter in the spring, you will suddenly recall the past farewell or encounter. At this time, the smell of flowers reminded me of a biochemistry sensei. “When organism starts to act actively, the source of its scent coming from the secondary metabolite will be upon various winds and become the scent of spring. What a fragrant smell!” Sensei would explain altogether dispassionately. To explain the secondary metabolites, the scent of flowers is enough, but the scent of Myriapoda and Beetles that start to move actively at the same time is also explained, making the atmosphere a little embarrassed in the lecture room. Of course, it must be an attractive story for him, and the sensei looked very happy while talking about such things.
Then, about 10 years later, when we met again, I brought a banana slug chocolate as a souvenir from California where my field work located. I was full of confidence, being sure that sensei would be amused and pleased, but “it won’t work if there is only banana slug, and the smell is not good either…” said by sensei, refusing to receive it in typical manner despite being apologetic. It smelled like banana, so it should be acceptable. I tried to explain more, “It may be a souvenir, but they shouldn’t name it something that a small child would misunderstand. Even if the name Banana slug comes from its shape, not its smell.” Sensei said with a serious face. Sensei passed away a few years ago, but it seems that sensei would be happy to chase after creatures that are not in this world, sniff and analyze them, and I recall my sensei as spring arrives.
It’s a memory of the scent of spring and chocolate (I can’t say it’s a title scam)
