鳥の写真
趣味という言葉は、職業ではなく個人が楽しみで愛好していることを指すので、その定義によれば何でも趣味になりえるようなのだが、やはり王道の趣味とそうでない趣味がある気がする。私の場合はこれまであまり王道の趣味に手を出しておらず、他人に趣味はと聞かれた際には読書と言ってお茶を濁していたのだが、最近写真という王道の趣味を始めた。といっても、大学への行き帰りの途中で見かけた鳥の写真を、普通のデジタルカメラで撮っているだけの、お金と時間のかからない趣味である。
一番多く撮影しているターゲットは鴨である。今の時期であれば、柏キャンパスにある五六郎池に行けば、いつでも会うことが出来る。しかも、基本的にはほとんど動かずに佇んでいてくれるので、初心者写真家にとっては大変ありがたい存在である。
鴨の写真を撮るのに慣れてくると、もう少し難しい対象に挑戦したくなる。最近の個人的ブームはメジロである。鴨と比べてまず遭遇すること自体が難しく、遭遇しても素早い動きに翻弄されて写真に収められないことがほとんどである。しかし日々意識して探していると、どのあたりにいることが多いかがわかってくる。また挑戦を繰り返すうち、メジロを怯えさせない距離感や素早く視野に収める技術などの勘所も少しずつ分かってきて、それなりの写真を撮れるようになってきた。
メジロの写真を撮っていて、私が普段取り組んでいる実験系の研究と似通った点があるように感じている。私はかれこれ15年ほど柏キャンパスに縁があるのだが、メジロがいることには全く気づいていなかった。漫然と見ているうちは全く気づかず、アンテナを張りつつ対象を見ることが重要なところ、はじめからうまくいくことはあまりなく、繰り返しが重要なところなど実にそっくりで、そう考えると趣味とはいえ示唆に富んでいると思う。
しかし何でも研究（=職業）にこじつけてしまうのは悪い癖で、趣味は趣味として、あまり余計なことを考えないで楽しむことに、本当の価値があるのかも知れない。

The word hobby, not indicating an occupation, but means that enjoying something for fun, therefore by this definition, anything interesting can become a hobby. On the contrary, personally speaking, a hobby can be categorized into famous and not-so-famous. In my case, I haven’t been involved in famous hobbies, and as someone asked me what my hobby was, I would just say reading books. But I have recently taken up the famous hobby of photography.
However, it is a hobby that does not cost money and time, just taking photographs for birds during the commute to the college with common digital camera.
The most common target for photograph is the duck. At this time of the year, one can always see ducks when travelling to the Gorokuroike in Kashiwa campus. Moreover, since those ducks usually stand still, it is a great opportunity for photograph beginners.
After getting used to taking photographs of ducks, it’s time to try something a little more difficult. Recent interest is taking photographs of the Japanese White-eye. Compared to ducks, they are more difficult to encounter, and even one does encounter the Japanese White-eye, they are usually at quick movements, not able to be captured by photographs. However, if intentionally searching for them, one will know where they can be often seen. In addition, as repeating to challenge myself, I gradually got key points such as the sense of distance, that won’t scare them, and the technique to quickly capture them in the photo. Now I have been
capable of taking some pictures of the Japanese White-eye.
Taking pictures of the Japanese white-eye shares similarities with the experimental research which is my daily work. I have been acquainted with the Kashiwa campus for about 15 years, but I was completely unaware about the Japanese White-eye. I can only notice it if I pay well attention to it. Initially it may not proceed successfully, and it requires repetition. These are common to both of the research and the photography, and although it is just a hobby, it is very suggestive.
However, it is a bad habit to relate it to the research (occupation), and the valuable core is to enjoy the hobby itself without thinking too much else.
